The Blick newsroom is one of the most interesting topics at the IFRA Newsroom Summit 2011 held in Zurich June 9th-10th. VG News Portal is an important part of the Blick news flow.
Through our software the editors around the circle of the newsroom quickly can monitor, view, decide and distribute the news coming in from different sources through Blick’s short number 8989.

Joi Ito appointed as CEO of MIT

Joi Ito – just remember the name. Some weeks ago this international 44 year old IT-name and friend of VG News Portal, was appointed as the new executive director of the MIT Media Lab.

As New York Times writes: ” MIT.. was originally founded by the architect Nicholas Negroponte in 1985 and has since become recognized for its willingness to take risks in developing technologies that are at the edge of the computing frontier.
The Media Laboratory gained a global reputation during the 1990s as an avant-garde research center known for stunning high-technology demonstrations that pointed toward a future digital society. ”

When meeting Joi Ito in Abu Dhabi during a presentation of VG News Portal, Mr. Ito was very impressed:” One great example was Vidar Meisingseths presentation about VG News Portal, a Norwegian news site that gets a huge percentage of its revenue from online and a substantial amount of news from amateur photographers and “tips” that come in via SMS, phone and email”, wrote Ito.
Joichi Ito is among other things a board member of the Mozilla Foundation and named by Businessweek as on of the 25 most influential People on the Web in 2008.

VG News Portal was in September 2010 installed in Europe’s latest and most professional integrated newsroom – at Ringier’s “Blick” in Zurich.

- To be an important part of the news gathering in this completely integrated newsroom, tells us that the VG News Portal is a good idea and a complete product, confirms Mr. Vidar Meisingseth, Project Manager at VG News Portal in Oslo, Norway. -We are very pleased to provide the Ringier Media Group with our product.
In September the CEO of Ringier, Mr. Marc Walder, is one of the main attractions of the IFRA “9th International Newsroom Summit” in London.

VG News Portal is attending the conference with a stand where editors-in-chiefs, CEO’s and decision makers from the media branch all around Europe may look into the program. At the VG News Portal stand at “Publish Asia” in Kuala Lumpur, the participants will have the opportunity to study the use of the iPhone-app for getting tips and pictures.

The concept and idea behind the newsportal is getting tips, stories, pictures and videos in a very easy way. SMS and MMS are the two main methods to receive information via short numbers like VGs 2200.

With the exploding number of iPhone users, we of course have made a special iPhone module – or app. The users are downloading the app for free from App Store. And then they may send tips and pictures directly into the media companys newsroom by two clicks on the iPhone-app. Some seconds later the story may be online.

Look at the “Resource Locator” at the Newsroom Summit in London

At the “9th International Newsroom Summit” in London in September 8-9th, VG News Portal will have a special demonstration of the portal at the Solution Park on Thursday 9th.

Among the features is the “Resource Locater”. This module allows you to put people, organizations or other assets with addresses into a database, which can be displayed

on a map.

This can be used for easily looking up available resources in a specific area.

Imagine that there is a ship sinking on the coast somewhere, and you can find contacts and freelancers in the same area, and have them go out and take pictures for you – long before your own reporters can be on site!

Special show from VGNP at IFRA Expo in Hamburg

Hamburg is this years destination of the annually gathering for media people in Europe. The Ifra Expo is a naturally place for VG News Portal to demonstrate our product.

And this year VG News Portal have a special show at the Media Port – a dedicated part of Hall A1. Project Manager Vidar Meisingseth from Verdens Gang AS, will tell about the use and success with taking tips from the readers in the Norwegian newspaper house. That expericen made the construction of VG News Portal – now used by a dozen media houses around the world. Mr. Fredrik Davidsson, Head of Innovation in Teknograd AS, will demonstrate the portal for the participants at Ifra Expo.
